Intervisit care, the support and services provided between outpatient visits, encompasses tasks like managing the EMR to communicate diagnostic results and address refill requests, phone calls, and patient portal messages. ACGME acknowledges that residents must participate in coordinating the care of patients across health care settings and between outpatient visits.
This proficiency is increasingly crucial as inter-visit care has grown due to expanded telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 21st Century Cures Act, granting patients greater access to EMR records. Nonetheless, challenges arise due to residents' limited time in outpatient settings and competing demands during intensive inpatient rotations, which can hinder teaching the necessary skills for effective intervisit care.
This webinar will discuss a comprehensive intervisit care curriculum and performance evaluation framework for internal medicine residents in their continuity clinics. Presenters will describe the curriculum's structure and stages and communicating inter-visit care expectations, providing technical training in EMR navigation, and administering a longitudinal inter-visit care curriculum. The discussion will extend to models for monitoring resident performance and furnishing feedback on inter-visit care. The presenters will dissect common challenges, pooling insights to tackle expected obstacles, such as defining supervision processes, devising cross-coverage mechanisms, and addressing accountability uncertainties when residents are "off-service" or based at different clinical sites. The webinar will culminate with a roadmap for advancing intervisit curricula and a Q&A session.
