July 2021—In keeping with the recent preliminary CoPA recommendations, AAIM guidelines for summary letters of evaluation (SLOE) were revised, expanded, and renamed to structured evaluative letters (SEL). By presenting specific data in an established format, SEL enables a standardized and structured review of an applicant, provides an opportunity to highlight clinical competencies and professional skills not assessed on standardized exams, and provides a more holistic view of an applicant’s strengths and areas for improvement. The FAQs highlight adjustments made, how to properly navigate the SEL, and advise on how to respond to individual components. A template and a mock up are also available.
