How long have you been a member of AAIM?

Since 1997! Well before AAIM. My very first professional meeting was APDIM and it changed my life. I knew at that point that I had found my professional home.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Mentoring and sponsoring students, residents and fellows. It never gets old. It really brings me tremendous joy to help the next generation think about their paths forward or deal with a problem in real time.

How has the AAIM membership been of value to you and your career?

I learned how to be an agile leader through AAIM. I started in APDIM and was on a couple of committees where I learned the importance of collaboration and consensus building in achieving desired outcomes. I was elected to council and really enjoyed the work but mostly  the community.

When did you know you wanted to pursue a career as a physician?

I got my first “doctor kit” when I was 3 years old. According to my mother, I took it everywhere and told people I was going to be a doctor. I have honestly never thought of doing anything else, ever.

What or who inspires you and why?

Faculty and residents inspire me. Meeting with young faculty or trainees who aspire to create change in the healthcare world to improve care of our patients. The bright and fresh ideas that come from a place of genuine idealism. It is not only energizing to be a part of that but a privilege.

What advice would you give to those who wish to pursue a career in this industry?

Network. Come to AAIM meetings. Get out of your comfort zone and meet people who can stretch your goals. Join a committee. Collaborate on a workshop. Share your challenges and learn from others. You have a lot of give and don’t be afraid to give it.

What is your favorite book or movie?

I love to cook so I get a pile of cooking magazines every month and read them all. Cooking lets me travel to different places without ever leaving my house!
