AAIM Chief Executive Officer Search

Chief Executive Officer, Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine

Alexandria, VA – The Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) and its members are seeking an experienced, strategic, and mission-oriented leader to serve as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This will be the first full-time CEO for AAIM, reflecting its continued evolution and growing impact within the academic medicine community.

Position Summary

AAIM is committed to the advancement and professional development of its members who prepare the next generation of internal medicine physicians and leaders through education, research, engagement, and collaboration. AAIM was created as a consortium of five academically focused specialty organizations. The five founding members consist of the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM), the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM), the Association of Specialty Professors (ASP), the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM), and the Administrators of Internal Medicine (AIM). AAIM represents more than 12,000 members and has an experienced staff of 30. The budget for AAIM is approximately $8 million, with meetings income and departmental membership dues forming the vast majority of revenues, and with educational programs and sponsorship programs also contributing.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for the overall strategy, vision, organization, and culture of AAIM. Currently, AAIM also has a physician President who maintains a 50 percent effort and has a focus on external relations and cross-Alliance collaborations. AAIM is currently evolving its governance, which will likely impact the President position. In strong partnership with the Board of Directors and President, the CEO also has shared responsibility as the external spokesperson, representative, and advocate for AAIM members. The CEO will assist the Board as it evolves to better meet member needs, advance member engagement, and diversify revenue streams.

AAIM seeks interest from leaders who have at least ten years of progressively responsible leadership and management experience in a medical society or association, academic medical center, or comparable not-for-profit organization. The incoming CEO must have outstanding communication and partnership skills, ability to work effectively with a volunteer board, and leadership skills to effectively manage organizational change. A Bachelor’s degree is required, and advanced education is preferred. The ideal candidate will also have knowledge of academic internal medicine and a history of growing revenues in a mission-oriented setting. This is an exceptional point in time and opportunity for a leader to advance AAIM's vibrant mission.

Our Strategic Plan: FY2021 to FY2027

The next President and CEO will join AAIM at an exciting time in the organization's history. AAIM has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan, committed to driving innovation across the continuum of medical education, transformation in faculty and leadership development, and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion across academic internal medicine. AAIM continues to serve as a convener and collaborator with key partners and stakeholders.
