Plenary Session I: Dipping below the Waterline: Diagnosing Team Dynamics
Friday October 20
8:00 a.m.–9:15 a.m.
Leaders today navigate through a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous work environment. It has never been more critical for today’s leaders to think systemically. Even the most dynamic and high-performing teams run into periods of lower function or dysfunction, and diagnosing the problems requires systems thinking. You’ll leave this interactive session with a concrete tool to help you see what’s happening on your team in a new light.
Cara Wilson is a Senior Management Coach at Tableau Software in Seattle, WA. Her passion is helping teams and leaders figure out how to leverage their strengths and identify their blind spots. Cara has spent nearly half of her 18-year career in health care, most recently at the Cleveland Clinic. Her clients span diverse backgrounds and industries, from construction workers to start-up entrepreneurs to physician leaders. Cara’s approach to her work is grounded in both her master’s degree in organizational development and her early career as a wilderness instructor and professional ski patroller.
Plenary Session II: Oral Abstract Presentations
Friday, October 20
4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
The top four abstracts submitted in the both programmatic innovation and research categories will be presented. This fast-moving session allocates 10 minutes per abstract to make time for as many new ideas and as much discussion as possible.
Plenary Session III: Teaching, Evaluating, and Remediating Competencies—International Models
Saturday, October 21, 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
Participants will learn perspectives on how the United Kingdom and Canada approach teaching, evaluating, and remediating competencies. These highly regarded professionals in the field will provide insights into how international medical educators address these competencies as well as how you can modify your approach to teaching, evaluating, and remediating the ACGME competencies in your own program.
Andrew Elder, MBchB, is Medical Director of MRCP (UK), a consultant physician in Acute Medicine for Older People in Edinburgh, Scotland, and an honorary professor at University of Edinburgh Medical School. He has held a number of positions relating to undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching and assessment at local and national levels.
Benjamin A. Alman, MD, is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. A prolific clinician-scientist, his research focuses on understanding the role of developmentally important processes in the pathologic process involving the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Alman is the principal investigator on several NIH grants; has more than 175 peer reviewed publications in journals; and has supervised over 30 graduate students and postdoctoral research trainees in his lab.
Lunch and Plenary Session IV: Thriving Amidst Chaos: Time Management Ideas That Work
Saturday, October 21
12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
In this plenary, Susan R. Johnson, MD, MS, will focus on effective time management skills that work for physicians who juggle many roles in their professional and personal lives. Specifically, Dr. Johnson will address how to make an effective "to do list" system and how to make both a daily plan and a monthly plan for projects. In addition, she will speak on how to effectively use your time and will provide tips for managing email.
Susan R. Johnson, MD, MS, is professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Univerity of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees as well as completed her residency training and her MS in preventive medicine and environmental health at University of Iowa. Dr. Johnson's interest in time management began many years ago, as she found herself struggling with how to get everything done on time. In 1998, Dr. Johnson researched the topic of time management thoroughly and began applying the principles she learned to her own work. Since that time, Dr. Johnson has made more than 100 presentations on this topic to physicians, support personnel, managers, students, and a variety of other groups around the country.
Plenary Session V: Orchestrating and Responding to Change: Stories from Inside the Actors’ Studio
Saturday, October 21
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
In this plenary, the speakers will discuss the theory and science for effective change management and share their personal journey in dealing with change. Several case-based scenarios will highlight the different aspects of change and how to lead it from front.
Jeffrey G. Wiese, MD, MHM, FACP, is Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at e Tulane University Health Sciences Center. he is also associate-chairman of medicine, the chief of the charity medical service and the director of the Tulane internal medicine residency program. He has also served as the course director for the clinical diagnosis, biostatistics, advanced internal medicine, and medical education courses.
Anne G. Pereira, MD, MPH, is Assistant Dean of Curriculum at the University of Minnesota Medical School as well as a practicing general internist. Her areas of interest and expertise lie in optimizing medical student readiness for residency training. In particular, she works to incorporate curriculum in interprofessional team care, quality improvement and patient safety, and public health.
