Precourse on Curriculum Development 101: Nuts and Bolts for the Busy Clinician Educator

So you’ve been asked to develop a curriculum and you aren’t sure what that means or how to do it? This precourse will help you learn about how you know if you need a curriculum, what’s a needs assessment, how do you differentiate goals from objectives, and so much more. This course is designed for all clinician educators at the UME or GME level looking to learn more about the “how and what” for successful curriculum development and implementation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this precourse, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the six steps of curriculum development and the importance of congruence among them
  • Utilize both a general and targeted needs assessment to clarify curricular needs
  • Differentiate goals from objectives
  • Identify differences in curricular design based on goals for dissemination
  • Develop a strategy for evaluation of a proposed curriculum
  • Apply the principles of curriculum development to enhance their work in medical education
  • Describe the diverse roles and needs that curriculum can meet
  • Identify additional resources that are available to help them improve their curriculum development skills.

Target Audience

This precourse is designed for UME, GME, and CME educators at any level who are responsible for or interested in curriculum development.
