The National Institute on Aging (NIA) developed the Grants for Early Medical and Surgical Subspecialists’ Transitions to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) awards program to provide critical research support to physician-scientists pursuing a research program focused on the geriatric population.  Utilizing the R03 award mechanism, the GEMSSTAR award program will provide award recipients up to $100,000 of direct research funding.  In order to receive a GEMSSTAR award, applicants must have a supplemental career development award.  In collaboration with the GEMSSTAR award program, ASP’s T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program, is one of several sources of career development support available to applicants.

The T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program awards will provide award recipients up to $50,000 in direct career development funding over the course of two years to supplement the GEMSSTAR funding.  Eligible applicants of the Williams Scholars awards must first receive a fundable score from the NIA for the research proposed in the GEMSSTAR application.  ASP has partnered with the following societies to offer awards beginning July 1, 2011.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply to the NIA for the GEMSSTAR award.  More information about NIA's GEMSSTAR award program is available in the GEMSSTAR funding announcement.
