ASP Announces Recipient of 2007 Neilson Award

The Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) presented the 2007 Eric G. Neilson, MD, Distinguished Professor Award to Daniel W. Foster, MD, at the American Society of Clinical Investigation/Association of American Physicians Joint Meeting on April 14, 2007, in Chicago, IL. Robert A. Rizza, MD, former Neilson Award recipient and former ASP President, presented the award to Dr. Foster.

Dr. Foster received the award in recognition of his efforts to support ASP while serving on the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM) Board of Directors, particularly as APM President from 2000-2001. During this important time in ASP’s development, Dr. Foster was instrumental in ensuring ASP’s place in the Federated Council for Internal Medicine and the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM); securing support for ASP from the APM staff, which now provides support to all AAIM associations; and overseeing ASP’s move to its current office in Washington, DC.

Dr. Foster currently serves as the John Denis McGarry, PhD, Distinguished Chair in Diabetes and Metabolic Research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Prior to serving in this position, he was Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

The ASP Eric G. Neilson, MD, Distinguished Professor Award is presented annually by the association to a physician who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and support of subspecialty internal medicine. Recent recipients of the award include William R. Hazzard, MD (2006), Dr. Rizza, (2005), Robert J. Myerburg, MD (2004), and Eric G. Neilson, MD (2003).
