AAIM President Emphasizes Visibility and Influence
D. Craig Brater, MD, the first President of AAIM, discusses his vision
for the future of the alliance. According to Dr. Brater, “AAIM has
the potential to influence the future direction of health care, while
continuing to advocate on behalf of medical education and research.”
Education Redesign
AAIM Adopts Six Education Redesign Recommendations
Following a two-year development and vetting process, AAIM adopted
six recommendations for redesigning education in the specialty. AAIM
will advance the recommendations through several alliance-wide task
forces and committees.
Certification
ABIM Takes Next Step to Recognize Hospital Medicine
Citing four key reasons, the ABIM Board of Directors voted to advance
a process that will develop “focused practice in hospital medicine” for
maintenance of certification. In addition, ABIM is exploring focused
practice in “comprehensive internal medicine.”
Accreditation
Tyranny of the Good
ACGME and RC-IM assess the quality of educational programs,
while ABMS and ABIM assess the quality of physicians. For the
accreditation and certification to work, however, the governed
must participate meaningfully in both processes by appointing
representatives to RC-IM and ABIM.
Medical Research
APM Spearheads Physician-Scientist Initiative
Recognizing the detrimental effects of a physician-scientist shortage,
APM has begun a long-term initiative to identify, develop, and
implement substantive and practical solutions that will ensure the
survival, growth, and diversity of the physician-scientist workforce.
Undergraduate Medical Education
SIMPLE: CDIM Develops Simulated Patient Cases
To provide a set of interactive, Internet-based, patient simulation
cases that will augment clinical learning during the internal
medicine core clerkship, CDIM is partnering with the Institute for
Innovative Technology in Medical Education to create the Simulated
Internal Medicine Patient Learning Experience.
