RRC-IM Launches Educational Innovations Project
The Residency Review Committee for Internal
Medicine (RRC-IM) formally launched its
Educational Innovations Project (EIP) at a
special session following the Association
of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM)
2006 Spring Conference. During the launch session,
representatives of the 17 EIP residencies described
their innovations, discussed facilitators and barriers
to change, and explored areas for cooperation as
they move into a new educational system facilitated
by regulatory changes ushered in by RRC-IM.
Considering a Formal Program for Medical Student Leadership Development
The United States has been in a health care
“crisis” for most of the 20th century. It
appears that the 21st century will continue
to offer the same stresses and challenges.
Enhanced physician leadership has been offered
as a solution to some of the health care problems
occurring in the United States, yet physicians
rarely have well-developed leadership skills (1,
2). Educating physicians in health care leadership
early in their careers may provide a jump-start for
physicians destined for leadership roles.
Another Year of Growth, Achievement
The Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine
(AAIM)—the consortium of five academically
focused specialty organizations representing
departments of internal medicine at medical
schools and teaching hospitals in the United States
and Canada—is bringing another year to a successful
close. Member services, educational programs, and
policy activities, as well as other initiatives, continue
to increase, improve, and flourish for AAIM and the
associations.
Three Workforce Reports Highlight Suspected Physician Shortages
Three recently released workforce reports
focus on the projected future shortage of
physicians in the United States, particularly
in physicians treating the critically
ill and aging populations. The reports provide
recommendations for ensuring physician supply will
meet demand by 2020.
Mid-Atlantic Medical Museums
The mid-Atlantic region offers an unusually
large number of museums dedicated to
preserving and disseminating the history
of medicine. These museums range from
the tiny, self-guided displays of the two-room Pest
House Museum, located in the midst of a historic
cemetery in downtown Lynchburg, VA, to such major
institutions as the Smithsonian Institution and the
National Institutes of Health, both in Washington, DC.
