ABIM Releases Practice Assessment Tools for Use in Residencies, Fellowships
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has released three of the practice improvement modules (PIMs) initially developed for use in the maintenance of certification (MoC) program for implementation in residencies and fellowships. The public release of these PIMs comes 12 months into a successful feasibility study that has shown the PIMs can be used in a number of differently structured residency programs.

Following a successful first year of implementing the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) Fellowships in infectious diseases and rheumatology and a successful second year with pulmonary/critical care medicine fellowship programs in four additional subspecialties will start with the system this fall. Cardiology, endocrinology, hematology/oncology, and nephrology have all joined the electronic application system residents use to apply for fellowships.

APDIM Completes Geriatrics Subcontract, Starts Designing New Initiative
The Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) has completed the project entitled, “Training for Excellence in the Care of Older Americans.” Funded by a grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF), through a
subcontract from the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the goal of the project was to assess the quality of internal medicine residency training in geriatrics from the perspective of both program directors and residents as well as engage leaders in the field in a process to improve residents’ preparation to care for elderly patients.
