2004 APM Commentaries in The American Journal of MedicineTo celebrate its 50th anniversary, APM dedicated its 2004 pages in The American Journal of
Medicine to five themes: (1)
reflections about the role of department chair, data about departments of internal medicine, and strategies for increasing the diversity of departments; (2) discovery, including the future of basic, clinical, translational, and health services research; (3) the future of education, which will address students, residents, and fellows as well as issues related to recruitment, continuing medical education, certification, recertification, and credentialing; (4) policy issues, such as the outlook for public support of medical education and research; and (5) the goals for members of the academic internal medicine community, culminating with the APM Long-Range Plan.
APM has invited respected, provocative leaders to address these themes. When compiled, these 24 commentaries will highlight the challenges and opportunities before American medicine, the academic medical and internal medicine communities, and APM members at this time. More important, the commentaries will help guide the association’s efforts to lead medicine for the next 50 years.
