Positions filled through the June 2006 match will begin in 2007.
A total of 3,964 applicants began the process of obtaining a position through MSMP. Of these entrants, 1,711 were graduates of US medical schools (USMGs), 497 were US citizens who graduated from foreign medical schools, and 1,516 were foreign born graduates of foreign medical schools. The 2,171 matches through MSMP represented 61 percent of all applicants who submitted rank order lists. US medical school graduates represented 1,278 (59 percent) of all matches, or 80 percent of all USMGs who submitted rank order lists.
The 2006 match represented the return of gastroenterology, hematology, and oncology to the match, which expanded in 2005 to include rheumatology. The expansion of the match results from the work of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) and its partners to rationalize the process for recruiting internal medicine residents to subspecialty fellowship positions. The expansion builds on AAIM’s related efforts to streamline the fellowship application process through the use of ERAS Fellowships in all internal medicine subspecialties. Beginning in the 2006-2007 academic year, all internal medicine subspecialty fellowship programs will be able to use ERAS Fellowships to receive applications and manage the application process.
